Atlético Madrid dominated the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they recorded a 5-1 victory over their city rivals, Real Madrid. The match was a classic clash between two of Spain's most successful clubs and it did not disappoint. The game started with both teams looking to establish themselves early on, but it was Atlético who took control from the off. They were dominant in possession and created numerous chances for themselves, with Joao Felix and Griezmann particularly dangerous up front. Real Madrid, on the other hand, struggled to find their rhythm and were unable to create any significant attacking threats. Despite this, they managed to hold out for much of the first half, thanks in part to some excellent defensive displays from the likes of Nacho and Casemiro. However, things changed in the second half when Atlético finally broke through. Felix volleyed home from close range to give his side a 1-0 lead just before the hour mark, and then he doubled the advantage moments later with a stunning strike from outside the box. Real Madrid responded immediately though, with Vinicius Junior equalising with a powerful shot that flew past Atalanta's goalkeeper. However, Atlético were soon back in front again, with Griezmann scoring his third goal of the season from close range. Real Madrid looked set to grab another late consolation goal, but their efforts were ultimately in vain as Atlético held on for a comfortable win. It was a deserved victory for Atlético, who have now won three consecutive league games and moved within touching distance of the top four. Overall, it was a fantastic display of football from Atlético Madrid, who showed why they are one of Europe's most successful clubs. They will be hoping to continue their good form against struggling sides like Leganes next week, while Real Madrid will need to regroup quickly if they want to keep up with their arch-rivals. |
